Research:
In the recent years, photoswitching of fluorescence in dyads composed of a photochromic diarylethene and a fluorescent dye has been reported by several groups. In these systems, the quenching of fluorescence originates from an intramolecular energy transfer (FRET) from the excited dye to the closed form of the diarylethene. A disadvantageous follow-up reaction of this FRET process is the ring-opening during reading the fluorescence “off” state that destroys the memory after a couple of read-outs. Such destructive read-out may be avoided by switching of fluorescence through intramolecular electron transfer. For this purpose, we have designed a photochromic system based on a diarylethene and a perylene bisimide fluorophore.
